Lakota Student Success Story – Koa

Koa, an 8th grader, has been part of the After-School All-Stars program since 6th grade, first joining because his parents needed a safe place for him to go after school. What started as a practical solution quickly became something much more meaningful. Over the years, Koa’s favorite part of the program has been spending time with friends and continuously making new ones. Through After-School All-Stars, he was introduced to positive people who helped shape him into a better leader and a better person, giving him a strong sense of belonging and connection within the program.

As he’s grown in the program, Koa has noticed a big change in himself — especially in his confidence and communication skills. He credits the welcoming environment and supportive staff for helping him feel comfortable being himself. He credits ASAS staff with having a lasting impact because they are realistic, welcoming, and help make students feel good about themselves. Now, as an 8th grader, Koa encourages younger students to “be cool and helpful,” and says as he moves on to high school, he will take with him the life skills learned at ASAS.
