< PreviousOUR CHAPTERS TAMPA BAY After-School All-Stars Tampa Bay provides academic and enrichment programs to children in local elementary, middle and high schools in the Tampa Bay area. We partner with the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County Schools, and local community leaders to create a safe educational environment for our youth. We have begun partnering with more K-8 traditional and charter schools. We are also striving to increase our programmatic footprint by serving high school age students in our workforce development program. We teach them valuable life skills like resume writing, financial literacy, and public speaking. In addition, ASAS Tampa Bay is combating summer learning loss by providing seven weeks of summer programming, including project- based learning, swimming lessons, dance, cooking, sports, art and more. The summer program is theme based, so our students can learn about fascinating topics like world geography, outer space and American history. Our goal is to keep our children safe and active in the summer, while at the same time expanding their minds with knowledge. 477 STUDENTS 5 SCHOOLS 97% QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM LEADERSHIP JOE MANGIONE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR BILL GIESEKING, BOARD CHAIR 30 | AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT PARTNERS ETHNICITY • 1% Asian/Pacific Islander • 59% Black/African American • 28% Hispanic/Latinx EXPENSES • 95% Program • 3% Fundraising • 2% Administration • 8% White • 4% Other • 14% Corporate • 4% Foundation • 69% Government • 4% Individual • 9% Event REVENUEOUR CHAPTERS TOLEDO After-School All-Stars Toledo has been advocating for families since the chapter opened. Toledo was once a thriving downtown area, but urban sprawl has left families with fewer opportunities for employment and resources. Local families were forced to search for employment elsewhere, which has made it more difficult for parents to pick up their children at the end of the school day. Recognizing the tremendous opportunity gap students in the downtown area faced, Toledo Public Schools partnered with ASAS to provide comprehensive after-school programs that would engage and support students’ academic and social-emotional needs. A unique feature of ASAS Toledo’s programming is the free, one-week summer Metroparks camp offered to students to gain experiences beyond their urban neighborhoods. Throughout the week, students spend time exploring and participating in outdoor activities such as archery, canoeing, and hiking. 244 STUDENTS 3 SCHOOLS 96% QUALIFY FOR FREE OR REDUCED LUNCH PROGRAM LEADERSHIP TRACY ENSIGN, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR CHRISTOPHER O’ SHAUGHNESSY, BOARD CHAIR AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT | 31 PARTNERS ETHNICITY • 43% Black/African American • 17% Hispanic/Latinx EXPENSES • 79% Program • 9% Fundraising • 12% Administration • 36% White • 4% Other REVENUE • 67% Government • 11% Event • 9% In-Kind • 7% Foundation • 4% Other • 1% Corporate • 1% IndividualOUR CHAPTERS WASHINGTON DC After-School All-Stars Washington DC has been a stabilizing presence in under-resourced middle schools for several years. Every school day, from the closing bell to 6:00 pm, ASAS brings to our wonderful students an extended learning environment with academic support and varied enrichment activities. Our students build drones in robotics class, learn music production, employ technology in digital photography and video game development class, discuss real estate and urban development in architecture class, and participate in dance, theater production, and our award-winning drum line. I’m incredibly grateful to our staff, who in addition to serving our students and families after school, have expanded the programs to include summer and spring breaks. When I think about our year-round impact, I believe that ASAS alum Zay said it best: “ASAS taught me that anything is possible if you stay motivated. At All-Stars, there’s always someone rooting for you on the other end.” Join me in rooting for Zay, and for all our All-Stars. Because the truth is, we can only do this work thanks to a broad group of partners, supporters, dedicated board members, and of course, thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors. From all of us at After-School All-Stars, our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for being part of our mission to help students succeed in school and life.
