Columbus, OH, May 13, 2014 – For the past 8 years, All-Star Ambassadors in Ohio have traveled to the Ohio Governor’s Residence and Heritage Gardens to prepare – and share – a healthy meal with Ohio First Lady Karen Kasich, while learning about healthy food choices from Columbus-based non-profit, Local Matters.
With the help of Local Matters, All-Stars prepare and cook a seasonal meal, and tour both the residence and gardens surrounding the home. Students later join Mrs. Kasich in the formal dining room, where they enjoy the meal they just prepared and talk about issues important to the students.
“Hosting my fellow All-Stars at the Governor’s Residence each year has been one of my absolute favorite events,” shared Mrs. Kasich. “It’s my way of thanking these students for their leadership and commitment to the program, and expressing my gratitude to After-School All-Stars for the tremendous opportunities they provide students in each Ohio chapter.
Currently serving as the Honorary Chair for ASAS Ohio Board, Mrs. Kasich regularly supports and participates in campaigns and events for All-Stars throughout the year. Some of the more notable events are: the annual Thanksgiving Meal Drive, Operation Warm (providing winter gear for students), weekend backpack meals, and the annual fundraiser, Experience Arnold.
“I love the mission of After-School All-Stars Ohio. There’s nothing more important than making sure our kids are safe. Students get help with homework, participate in enrichment opportunities, and receive what for many of them is the last meal of the day,” said Mrs. Kasich. “The Governor and I are proud of After-School All-Stars commitment to help some of Ohio’s most vulnerable children and thankful to everyone supporting those efforts.”
