OUR PEOPLE, OUR IMPACT AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS 2019 ANNUAL REPORTSUPPORT OUR YOUTH afterschoolallstars.org/giveDEAR SUPPORTERS of ALL our dedicated staff, mentors, and supporters who have contributed to our story that you’ll read about in the following pages. As we approach our 30th anniversary, After-School All-Stars is poised to further our mission and expand our programs to include more students, schools and communities. This is only possible thanks to our generous partners and supporters, and especially, our dedicated team who spend every day helping our students succeed in school and life. Sincerely, Ben Paul President and CEO I was watching the dancers move across the stage in sync with the flashing lights when, swept up in the drama of the moment, I was jarred by the instructor yelling “cut!” The room flooded with light, and the dancers and crew launched into a discussion of the dance number I had just seen. What amazed me was not just the performance I had just witnessed, but the realization that in countless classrooms across the country, similar experiences of mentorship, teaching, and discovery take place every afternoon. As the dance practice wrapped up, some of the students shared with me the impact the program had on their lives: boosting their confidence, contributing to their sense of inclusion, and inspiring a deeper engagement in school day classes. I’m honored to present our 2018-2019 annual report, where you will read about our programs and the staff that make them possible every day. You’ll meet Edgar, a staff member and ASAS alum who now recruits the next generation of All-Star staff and mentors. It was his own experience of a mentor motivating him that inspired his desire to join our work. I’m incredibly proud A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORT | 3MISSION, VISION, VALUES OUR MISSION After-School All-Stars (ASAS) provides comprehensive after-school programs that keep children safe and help them succeed in school and life. OUR VALUES At After-School All-Stars, we seek people who are committed to the mission of helping kids succeed in school and in life. We view leadership as service, and keep in mind that our work is on behalf of our chapters, staff, and ultimately for our students and their communities. We commit to excellence individually and as a group by setting high standards and planning to meet them. OUR VISION Our vision is for our All-Stars to be safe and healthy, to graduate high school and go to college, to find careers they love and then give back to their communities. ACCOUNTABLE We take ownership of our work. We set goals and make plans to meet them, and we expect results. Being an All Star is owning that our work impacts youth. PROACTIVE We don’t wait to be asked for ideas or feedback. We look ahead to find solutions. ENTREPRENEURIAL We build and create. We look at our roles and figure out how to apply what we’ve learned toward the future. COLLABORATIVE We recognize that our quality is amplified by working together, within ASAS, with partners, and with the communities we serve. TRANSPARENT We are honest with each other, and we give credit where it’s due. In running a large organization, transparency is crucial to working collaboratively. 4 | AFTER-SCHOOL ALL-STARS | 2019 ANNUAL REPORTOUR REACH ASAS provides free, comprehensive after-school programming for low-income K-12 students at Title 1 schools in cities across the nation.
