    Andrea Bazán was promoted to the role of President at After-School All-Stars in July 2021 after serving as Chief Development Officer. Previously, Andrea was CEO of PUENTE Learning Center, a prominent Charter School, Adult Education Center and nonprofit serving the immigrant community in the famous Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles.

    Andrea has had a career in nonprofits, philanthropy, academia and politics. She’s recognized nationally as a Latina leader and has dedicated her life to ensuring that opportunities exist for all. She has served as SVP of Development at United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, President of Triangle Community Foundation, and Executive Director of El Pueblo, a statewide Latino organization she co-founded. As the first Latina lobbyist at the NC General Assembly, she pushed for the first legislation on in-state tuition for immigrant students and drivers’ licenses for undocumented workers in the nation.

    Her board service includes Farmworker Justice, National Council of La Raza (now UnidosUS) where she also served as Chair, The Duke Endowment, The Rex Endowment, Wachovia Bank, Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC, The Nasher Museum, and The Women’s Forum, among others.

    She worked in President Obama’s 2012 reelection campaign and political appointments include being named to the Medical Care Commission and NC Institute of Medicine by NC Gov. Hunt and NC Gov. Mike Easley as well as serving as an advisor to UNC President Erskine Bowles in the UNC Tomorrow Commission. She had the honor of being named to President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Community Partnerships and was also a member of the Homeland Security Council’s Southwest Border Task Force under Secretary Shalala.

    Andrea has an MSW and an MPH from the University of NC at Chapel Hill. She grew up in Argentina and moved to New Orleans as a young teenager with her family after fleeing Argentina during the Dirty War. Andrea is the proud mother of three daughters, Carolina, Juliana, and Victoria.

    Ben Paul is CEO of After-School All-Stars (ASAS), a national non-profit organization founded in 1992 by Arnold Schwarzenegger. ASAS provides free daily after-school programs to over 80,000 low-income children across  America. Since joining ASAS in 2003, Paul has led the organization’s expansion from 45 to nearly 400 schools, broadened the mission to include the three pillars of academics, enrichment, and health & fitness, and expanded the chapter network reach from 15 to over 50 cities.  Today, ASAS is the largest national after-school network uniquely focused on providing comprehensive school-based programs.

    Ben combines his passion for helping kids and families with nearly 20 years of business management and entrepreneurial experience. Prior to ASAS, Ben was a founding partner of a Los Angeles real-estate investment group, worked at International Consultants on Targeted Security (ICTS), an anti-terrorism flight-security firm, and served four years in the Israeli army, retiring as a company commander.

    Ben has served on numerous non-profit boards, including the Board of Trustees of America’s Promise Alliance, a collaborative network founded by Colin and Alma Powell and the Board of Advisors of the Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy. Ben was the co-founder and Board Chairman of three charter school networks, Larchmont Charter Schools, Valley Charter Schools, and City Charter Schools.

    Vanessa Waserman has 15 years of experience working in the public and nonprofit sectors. Vanessa started her career on the Obama 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns, and also served as an appointee in President Obama’s administration as a Congressional Relations Officer at the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development. In 2013, Vanessa made the transition to the nonprofit sector and has held leadership positions at the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago and Taproot Foundation. In her current role as Senior Vice President of Development at After-School All-Stars, she oversees fundraising for the National office and manages a team that provides support to chapters. Vanessa holds a B.A. in Public Relations from Loras College and an M.A. in Mass Communication from North Dakota State University. She is also a certified Yoga instructor who is working to integrate her practice into daily life.
